How much does a website cost in Australia?
A plain-English guide to what a small-business website really costs in 2026 — the honest range, what actually drives the price, and how DIY, freelancers, agencies and lean studios stack up. No jargon, no sales spin.
The honest short answer.
For a small business in Australia in 2026, a custom website commonly lands somewhere between $1,500 and $6,000+.
A simple few-page site sits at the lower end; a larger site with more pages, e-commerce or integrations climbs from there.
That's a wide band because "a website" can mean a tidy three-page brochure or a fifteen-page lead engine with online bookings. For context, our own builds start from $1,200 ex GST for a 1–3 page Essentials site — but the right number for you depends on what's actually on the page. The rest of this guide explains what moves it.
What actually drives the price.
Five things move the number more than anything else. Get clear on these and any quote starts to make sense.
Number of pages
Three pages is a different job to fifteen. More pages means more design, more writing and more to test — so page count is usually the biggest single lever on price.
Custom vs template design
A theme you fill in yourself is cheapest. A design built around your business — your services, your photos, your customers — costs more, and looks the part.
Copywriting
Words that sell take time. If you supply the content the build is faster; if someone writes it for you, that's a real cost line — worth knowing before you compare quotes.
E-commerce
Selling products online means a store, a checkout, products, shipping and tax — more moving parts than a brochure site, and a higher starting price.
Integrations
Online bookings, payment links, a CRM, email marketing or a booking system each add setup. A handful are easy; a long list adds up.
The options compared.
There's no single "right" way to get a website — only the right fit for your budget and how much you want to do yourself. Here's a fair read on the four common routes.
DIY website builder · roughly $0–$600/yr
Wix, Squarespace or Shopify on your own. Genuinely fine if you have the time and a good eye. The cost is mostly your hours and ongoing subscriptions — and the result tends to look like the template it came from.
Overseas or budget freelancer · roughly $500–$2,500
A low price point and some great freelancers out there. The trade-offs are usually communication, timezones, and what happens after launch — so check who owns the site and who you call when something breaks.
Traditional agency · roughly $8,000–$30,000+
A full team, deep process and the polish to match. Excellent for larger projects with bigger budgets. For a small business it can mean paying for overhead and layers you don't strictly need.
Lean studio (like us) · roughly $1,200–$5,000
Agency-grade design without the agency overhead. We build fast with AI-assisted development, work directly with you, and quote a fixed price in writing. Premium result, small-studio price.

What to watch out for.
The sticker price isn't the whole story. A few things can quietly cost you more than the build itself.
Lock-in
Some providers build on platforms only they can touch, so you can't leave without rebuilding. Ask up front whether you can move your site elsewhere.
The "free website" trap
A site bundled into a long contract or a high monthly fee is rarely free. Add up what you'll pay over two or three years before you sign.
Ongoing fees
Hosting, domain, plugins and care plans are normal — but you should see them itemised, not buried. Know the monthly number before launch, not after.
Who actually owns it
If it's not in your name, it's not really yours. We build everything in your accounts and hand it over in full — more on that in our ownership guide.
